For years, Artificial Intelligence (AI) has been working, perhaps largely unnoticed, in the background of many of the platforms and technologies we use daily. The launch of ChatGPT has changed all of that. OpenAI’s ChatGPT gained 100 million users within two months of launching, pushing AI into the mainstream spotlight. Media coverage was initially upbeat and optimistic, presenting it as an easily accessible technology that would transform how we work and eliminate mundane tasks. However, as with previous technologies, the headlines are now much more mixed, and significant concerns are emerging about the longer-term impact of AI. This presentation will consider the good, the bad, and the ugly aspects of generative AI, highlighting the need for us to use it critically and ethically to realise its benefits.
